About Spotlight Initiative
Violence against women (VAW) and girls is one of the most systematic and widespread human rights violations.

Spotlight Initiative (SI) is the world's largest dedicated effort to end all forms of violence against women and girls by 2030.

Each country and regional programme focuses on addressing legislative and policy gaps, strengthening institutions, promoting gender-equitable attitudes, providing quality services to affected of violence, producing disaggregated data and empowering women’s movements. Significant attention is given to the improvement of data collecting methods and the quality of gender statistics.

Implementation of these programms is guided by the principle «nobody will stay away from the benefits of development», which was laid down in the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to eradicate poverty and build more equitable & sustainable world.

The initiative is implemented as a global multi-year partnership between the EU and the UN in 25 countries and regions of the world.
Gender equality in Sustainable Development Agenda
In 2015 the UN proposed an integrated development agenda for its member countries. All development challenges facing humanity today are consolidated in the form of 17 Global Goals there.

Goal 5 «Gender equality» is rightfully central to the system of the Global Goals for Sustainable Development. Gender equality, besides being a fundamental human right, is essential to achieve peaceful societies, with full human potential. Women and girls represent half of the world’s population and, therefore, also half of its potential.

Why does gender equality matter?
Unequal access of men and women to resources or non-participation in decision-making has direct economic and social impact. This impact not only affect the lives of women, but also affect the well-being of their children, local communities and countries.
